Designing a Skyscraper

Shanghai is a fascinating city which is growing at a mind-blowing pace. The Year 4 students were investigating this city in which they live - the people, the culture and the physical environment. In Art, we took a close look at the architecture that shapes our city. There are so many unique buildings which have defined Shanghai's skyline on the world stage.

We were delighted to learn that one of our class mothers, Ruby, is an architect. She very kindly came to visit us to explain what an architects role is and what they have to consider when designing a building. We learned so much!

Shanghai aside, the students observed famous skyscrapers from around the world, such as the Burj Al Arab in Dubai and the Empire State Building in New York City. This gave the students plenty of inspiration for designing a skyscraper of their own. Their designs needed to reflect their personality or interests in some way.

After creating the designs, the class then constructed models of their skyscrapers using milk cartons, boxes, bottle caps and other recycled junk. With the help of some super parent volunteers, who helped with the craft knives and glue guns, these skyscrapers took form. The following week the students painted them and then placed them on display in the Library.

To enhance the model display, each student created a recording of themselves explaining their design. This was then generated into a QR code (a barcode that you scan with your smartphone, directing you to a site which displays relative information) which was displayed next to each model. After scanning the barcode, parents and visitors could listen to our budding architects and gain a deeper inside into each artwork.
